Mobile phone iPhone 5c. Battery. More is not better
Apple presented its consumers with a pair of flagship smartphones, the iPhone 5S and the cheaper iPhone 5C. By external iPhone specifications 5C is not much different from the previous one iPhone models 5. It cannot be said that the design of the device has changed much, however, the “Home” button has received a new look and excellent functionality. A progressive TouchID fingerprint scanner was placed at the bottom of the home button. An improved dual LED flash has also been added to the device.
The hardware of the iPhone 5C has advanced a little, but has not changed on a large scale either. Has undergone modernization additional processor A7 for iPhone on the iOS 7 platform. For the first time, the iPhone 5C launched a 64-bit operating system for the smartphone’s dual-core A6 processor. This made it possible to increase the power of the device by 40 units when compared with its predecessor, and also made it possible to transform the graphics by 56 times. The operating memory of the smartphone has not changed and remains at 1 GB.
The external camera characteristics of the iPhone 5C have remained virtually unchanged and the lens resolution remains at the same level.
Today many people ask: how many megapixels were added to the 5C? The front camera is 8 megapixels. The characteristics of the updated front and side 1.2 megapixels, with three times zoom, the iPhone 5C cameras have also changed qualitatively, in particular, the sensor size has increased by 15%, and the pixel size is 1.5 microns, which makes it possible to obtain good photo quality even in low light. The advanced dual LED flash gives users the ability to adjust the level of cool and warm when taking photos with more than 1000 types of color combinations.
The new functionality of the iPhone 5C includes panoramic shooting and face recognition. What is important for the user is the ability to autofocus and touch focus. Photo quality is guaranteed LED flash and a light sensor located on the back of the case. Thanks to the increased quality of optics with a 5-lens lens and the resolution of the matrix, the iPhone has become more advanced in functionality. The smartphone screen resolution is 1136×640.
As for the video capabilities with the Face Time camera, the device boasts good stabilization and a scan rate of 1080p HD quality at a video speed of 30 frames per second. At the same time, a function has appeared for linking photos and videos to the shooting location. Users will be able to enjoy shooting HD quality videos in 720p format.
iPhone 5C Communications
Modern Apple iPhone 5C provides mobile communications using a single Nano-sim sized phone card in UMTS, HSPA, GSM, LTE, CDMA, HSDPA modes. Built-in bluetooth headset 4.0 allows you to use wireless communication for telephone conversations, video calls and file transfers from the phone.
Video quality is supported by FaceTime using a Wi-Fi network or a 3G or 4G network mobile communications. At the same time, video calls with HVGA resolution (480×368) are carried out thanks to high-tech networks LTE, DC-HSDPA, HSPA+, 3G and 2G.
Dimensions of iPhone 5C
The iPhone 5c dimensions and technical specifications in no way surpassed its predecessor. The iPhone 5C has become a little thicker with a thickness of 8.97 mm, a little heavier with a width of 59.2 mm and a length of 124.4 mm, weighing 132 grams, which was due to an increase in the rigidity of the plastic case.
The smartphone still has good ergonomics, which is especially noticeable when you hold the iPhone in your hand. Wearing a cover will help prevent the case from slipping excessively.
iPhone 5C case colors
Many were under the impression that Apple adheres to a strict style, but this impression was dispelled by the release of the iPhone 5C model. This time the company pleased its consumers with the polygamy of the color spectrum. Previously, the color was mainly black, and after the usual black, white and gold, lemon yellow, pink-red, blue-blue and green iPhone 5c body color options appeared. Now the iPhone 5C is easy to distinguish from other models thanks to its unique bright colors; fashionistas will certainly appreciate this approach.
The first experiments in color occurred with the iPod nano and touch media players. Apparently now this moment has inspired the creators to experiment with the iPhone. Most likely, such a variety of colors will have its effect on device sales and the company will feel the superiority of sales volumes, making the colors of 5 more noticeable and aesthetically attractive.
The common logical difference between all iPhone 5C cases is that the frames surrounding the screen will remain black on any device.
Maximum sound and its capabilities
How many users are accustomed to paying attention to the quality of the sound reproduced on the iPhone. Their exactingness, in turn, forced manufacturers to move forward with the times. Therefore, the iPhone 5C can boast improved frequency characteristics sound at a frequency from 20 Hz to 20 kHz, supporting various audio formats: popular MP3 (from 8 to 320 kbps).
Audio formats also supported: AAC (from 8 to 320 kbps), AIFF, HE-AAC, AAX, WAV, Apple Lossless formats and others.
iPhone 5C diagonal has its pros and cons, gives ample opportunities multimedia, accompanied by high-quality stereo sound and acoustics. Almost all multimedia applications are provided with settings maximum volume, allowing you to please the most demanding listener. The sound in the headphones, thanks to the built-in three microphones, is not inferior to external speakers and built-in high-quality acoustics. The iPhone 5C is equipped with a high-quality audio headset, EarPods, which Apple can rightfully be proud of, having spent many years on their creation and design. The headphones themselves are connected via the usual 3.5 mm audio jack.
Description of video and TV
Users are increasingly paying attention to the quality and capabilities of video on the iPhone display. The iPhone 5C provides the ability to broadcast video to a large TV screen, just like its previous models.
The new iPhone 5C has a additional option, which allows you to duplicate files from AirPlay video with a maximum refresh rate of 720p. In this case, duplication support is achieved using an Apple Digital AV Adapter or an original Apple VGA adapter. High quality sound Stereo plays in m4v, mp4 and mov formats.
Shooting video on an iPhone is a popular and sought-after option, however, a decent result, regardless of the resolution power, can only be obtained with high professional decoding. b
iPhone 5C Display Features
In the upgraded iPhone 5c model, the Retina screen view is quite large, has a wide Multi-Touch format with a 4-inch diagonal. The externally pleasant tactile sensation of the screen is provided by a grease-repellent micro-coating that prevents fingerprints from sticking to any panel of the smartphone. You can feel the oleophobic coating by comparing the old one iPhone display, picking it up along with the new one.
The rich screen contrast is unmatched, reaching a standard 800:1 ratio with a powerful brightness of up to 500 cd/m2 and functional support for displaying different languages and the same characters at the same time. Unsurpassed image clarity is provided by a resolution of 1136 x 640 pixels (326 pixels/inch).
Memory and battery capabilities
Manufacturers proudly presented the iPhone 5C with a standard memory capacity of 16Gb and an increased memory capacity of 32Gb. If we do not forget that it is not possible to increase the memory in the iPhone due to the lack of slots as such, then deciding on the choice of model is a really important step.
Standard 16 GB memory is suitable for most users who are less active in downloading files and filling the memory to the limit with unnecessary things, but, on the contrary, strive for accurate and high-quality use. True music lovers, photo and video enthusiasts will of course prefer a 32 GB device.
One of the main questions asked by users regarding the iPhone 5C is what the battery power is and its capabilities. This question is related to the fact that the problem lithium batteries in their super-thinness. Even with super-technical characteristics and charging capabilities, unfortunately, devices cannot be mega-capacious due to data accumulation technologies.
Manufacturers still managed to maintain a balance regarding the time of continuous use of the smartphone and its external size. Possibilities iPhone batteries The 5C reached 10 hours, not much more than its predecessor. However, those who want more have the right to use external views battery devices, built-in, for example, in a smartphone case or additional cubes with charging.
Fans of the 3G network will appreciate the ability of the smartphone to be on the Internet for up to 8 hours in a row, and users of the LTE network will be able to spend up to 10 hours on it. In turn, fans of the network Wi-Fi browser Now they will be able to use Internet services for up to 10 hours.
Battery power is provided by a built-in lithium-ion battery, charged via USB cable from PC or adapter. The battery capabilities allow you to use the smartphone offline - up to 250 hours and up to 10 hours on the 3G network in communication mode, and in music playback mode - up to 40 hours. You can enjoy movies and games on iPhone 5C continuously for 10 hours.
Additional features
The digital compass built into the iPhone 5C allows its owner to find himself in space, determining his location relative to the cardinal points. The iPhone 5C has received new navigation capabilities that allow you to navigate unfamiliar areas and link to the location of photographs to take search queries and performing other equally important functions. Find your location by Wi-Fi networks and 3G or 4G will be useful in the absence of other satellites.
Other wireless networks that serve the iPhone 5C are Wi-Fi and Bluetooth networks. Undoubtedly, the iPhone 5 C has unhindered access to public and corporate Wi-Fi networks.
Thanks to built-in Bluetooth 4.0, which provides communication via data transfer protocols, iPhone 5C has the ability to use wireless headsets to listen to calls, music or books. At the same time, the iPhone 5C boasts increased data transfer speeds while maintaining high sound quality.
The versatility of the smartphone is ensured by a sufficient number of different sensors, in particular, a proximity sensor that monitors changes in the position of the user’s body relative to three-dimensional space. The built-in accelerometer allows you to remember the speed of movement of the smartphone in space. And distance and proximity sensors help because during a conversation they determine the need for backlighting on the screen when the smartphone approaches the speaker’s ear, while eliminating the possibility of accidentally pressing keys.
In turn, the ambient light sensor helps the iPhone 5C adjust the brightness and backlight of the display automatically when the ambient light changes, saving the user from manually adjusting the brightness.
The release date for the iPhone 5C is October 2013.
Last week we told you about the new flagship of the Apple smartphone line - iPhone 5s. And now we have a second new product for testing, less technically advanced, but attracting increased attention due to its design and the very fact of its appearance - for the first time, Apple is releasing two versions of the iPhone at the same time.
Rumors that Apple would release an iPhone in a plastic case had been circulating long before the presentation, and even the name of the Cupertino company’s model could not be kept secret. But the iPhone 5c was supposed to be Apple's first cheap smartphone, and these expectations were not destined to come true. The iPhone 5c is indeed cheaper than the 5s, but only by $100, while its hardware is identical in almost all respects to the iPhone 5. That is, in fact, the iPhone 5c replaces the iPhone 5 in Apple’s lineup (and indeed, now it cannot be bought in the American online store Apple).
In past years after graduation new version iPhone price the old one was reduced by $100, but now Apple has decided to simply replace it old model. Perhaps this is an attempt to attract a new audience - the one who liked Nokia Lumia for bright colors, and the iPhone seemed boring. Perhaps it’s all about the desire to save on the body: thanks to this, the cost of the iPhone 5c may be lower than that of the iPhone 5, and the company’s net profit, accordingly, will be higher. Of course, by doing so, Apple introduced some confusion into its model range: Previously, people understood that a new iPhone meant it was more advanced. Now the question arises: which is better - iPhone 5 or 5c? And how much better?
Let's look at the characteristics of the new product.
- SoC Apple A6 @1.3 GHz (2 cores, ARMv7s architecture)

Judging by the characteristics, the main differences from the iPhone 5 are the support for those LTE bands that were not previously supported (including Russian ones). The second difference is the battery. Apple traditionally does not disclose the battery capacity, but judging by the available information, it is slightly more capacious than that of the iPhone 5.
Now let's compare the iPhone 5c and iPhone 5s, and also compare the new product with its main competitors - Samsung Galaxy S4 and Sony Zperia Z (most likely, their cost will be close to the iPhone 5c at the time it goes on official sale with us).

As you can see from the characteristics, the iPhone 5c is inferior to its competitors on all fronts. In principle, nothing surprising: in fact, we are dealing with last year’s configuration, whereas Samsung smartphones and Sony came out this year. But the price of the iPhone 5c is such that it doesn't even fall into the mid-budget category, so such a comparison is inevitable.
As for the comparison with the iPhone 5s, here we pay attention, in addition to performance, to parameters such as weight and thickness: the iPhone 5c has them noticeably larger.
However, in the case of Apple products, any correspondence comparison should be treated with some degree of skepticism, so we will not draw far-reaching conclusions and move on to testing.
Equipment
If the older model iPhone 5s, like all its predecessors, is sold in a cardboard box, then the packaging of the iPhone 5c brings to mind, first of all, the iPod touch.
The plastic box looks good, but it is very uncomfortable after you first open it. The top cover and the iPhone lying underneath on a transparent stand are not attached to the bottom of the box in any way, so you have to either constantly seal the package around the perimeter with adhesive tape, or open it very carefully so that the contents do not fall out.
As for the equipment, there are no surprises here, everything is traditional. Let's just note the location of the paperclip for extending the SIM tray: it is attached to one of the leaves (since there is no envelope here, like the iPhone 5s and iPhone 5). Let us also explain that if you buy a smartphone in the USA or Hong Kong (we had a copy from there), then be prepared to look for an adapter for a European plug.
Design
Design is the main and most controversial feature of the iPhone 5c. The body here is made of a single piece of glossy, smooth (even slippery) plastic. Five color options are available: white, yellow, light green, blue and pink. We had the last one of them - the most “girly” one :)
However, it is worth noting that the pink color here still does not look as banal and vulgar as one might think. You could even say that the color is quite interesting: it has a slight crimson tint, and some see an orange tint.
Photos, of course, do not fully convey the color: in the hand, the pink iPhone 5c looks a little different, which, however, does not negate the fact that this is a purely female option.
The layout of the controls on the iPhone 5c is identical to the older model. On the left side there are two volume buttons, as well as a lever for turning on the silent mode. On the top edge is the Power button.
All buttons are pressed quite firmly, with a distinct sound. But the volume buttons have a different shape than the iPhone 5s: elongated, not round.
On the bottom edge there is a Lightning connector, a 3.5 mm headset jack, as well as speaker holes (on the right) and a built-in microphone (on the left). But again, there is a slight difference: there are fewer holes than on the iPhone 5s (which, however, according to subjective feelings, does not affect the volume and quality of voice transmission).
On the right side there is only a cradle for a SIM card of the Nano-SIM standard; there are no differences here from the older model.
There are no complaints about the build quality.
Already during the testing process, our editorial office found another copy of the iPhone 5c, white. The photo below shows an iPhone 5, a pink iPhone 5c and a white iPhone 5c.
The white version, in our opinion, looks rustic and cheap, and reeks of something Samsung. On the other hand, it is more universal: it can be imagined in the hands of both a man and a woman, a young user and a mature one. But, of course, it won’t be a fashionable one. This is just a convenient means of communication, nothing more.
In general, the design of the iPhone 5c is, of course, not for everyone. Plastic colored iPhone? Well, well... Apple defenders can, however, recall the iPhone 3G/3GS, which also had a plastic case, and even the revolutionary blue iMac - Jony Ive's first design masterpiece, but Apple's specialty has always been the creation of new trends. And the iPhone 5c is just an attempt to play in the field of Nokia and Samsung. Even if it is worthy enough.
Screen
For those who are interested in the answer to the most important question regarding the iPhone 5c screen, we will not keep you in suspense and will answer right away: the screen is exactly the same as that of the older model 5s (and, accordingly, the old iPhone 5). Now let's talk in more detail. Screen testing using tools was performed by Alexey Kudryavtsev.
The smartphone screen is covered with a glass plate with a mirror-smooth surface and, judging by the reflection of bright light sources in it, has a very effective anti-glare filter that is superior to the Google Nexus 7 screen filter in reducing reflection brightness. Doubling (and even tripling) of reflected objects is present to some extent, but the shadows of the objects are very weak, this indicates that there is no air gap between the outer glass and the surface of the matrix. There is a special oleophobic (grease-repellent) coating on the outer surface of the screen (effective, but still slightly worse than in the case of the Google Nexus 7), so fingerprints do not appear as quickly as with regular glass, but are removed more easily.
With manual brightness control, its maximum value was about 550 cd/m² (which is slightly more than that of the iPhone 5s), the minimum was 5 cd/m². As a result, at maximum brightness, even in bright daylight, the screen will remain sufficiently readable, and in complete darkness, the brightness can be reduced to a comfortable level. There is automatic adjustment of the backlight brightness based on the light sensor (it is located to the left of the front camera). IN automatic mode When external lighting conditions change, the screen brightness both increases and decreases. In complete darkness, in automatic mode, the brightness is reduced to 5 cd/m² (this is too low), in an office illuminated by artificial light, the brightness is set to 95-115 cd/m² when increasing from the minimum (acceptable) and to 150 cd/m² (normal ) when decreasing from the maximum, and in a brightly lit environment (corresponding to lighting on a clear day outdoors, but without direct sunlight) increases almost to the maximum, up to 530 cd/m². As a result, this function works slightly better than in the case of the iPhone 5s, since when moving to average light levels, the hysteresis (the difference between the levels set when the ambient light increases from minimum to maximum and, vice versa, when it decreases) is acceptable. Whether this difference between the models is a systematic property or just a random deviation is unknown to us. At lower brightness, there is virtually no backlight modulation, so it is impossible to visually see the flickering of the screen.
IN this screen An IPS type matrix is installed. The microphotograph demonstrates the structure of subpixels typical of IPS - if you look closely, you can see the division of subpixels by control electrodes into narrow “beds” characteristic of IPS:
The dark spots in the following photo (at a lower magnification) are dust that has settled somewhere between the layers of the screen:
Yes, it seems iPhone screens 5c are assembled under the same conditions as 5s screens. The screen has very good viewing angles without inverting shades and without significant color shifts, even with large viewing deviations from perpendicular to the screen. When deviated diagonally, the black field brightens very little (but still more than that of the screen of the Google Nexus 7 tablet) and, depending on the direction of the deviation, acquires a red-violet or bluish tint. When viewed perpendicularly, the uniformity of the black field is good, but not ideal. The contrast is quite high - about 870:1. The gamma curve constructed using 32 points did not reveal a blockage either in the highlights or in the shadows, and the index of the approximating power function is 2.22, which is almost equal to the standard value of 2.2, while the real gamma curve coincides with the power dependence:
The response time for the black-white-black transition is 26 ms (14 ms on + 12 ms off), the transition between 25% and 75% gray halftones (based on the numerical value of the color) takes a total of 38 ms.
Color gamut is sRGB:
The spectra show that the matrix filters mix the components with each other to a moderate extent. As a result, visually the colors have a natural saturation.
The balance of shades on the gray scale is good, since the color temperature is not much higher than the standard 6500 K and its variation is very small, and the deviation from the blackbody spectrum (delta E) is significantly less than 10, which is considered a good indicator for a consumer device, and also changes little from shade to shade. (Dark areas of the gray scale can be ignored, since color balance there is not very important, and the error in measuring color characteristics at low brightness is large.)
The main conclusion has already been presented above. Regardless of comparison with the iPhone 5s, let's summarize: the screen is excellent - the most effective anti-glare filter among all mobile devices, what we tested, good oleophobic coating, high brightness, more or less adequately working automatic adjustment of backlight brightness, stable and deep black color, very good color rendition.
Software
iPhone 5c comes pre-installed with operating system iOS system 7. There are no differences from iOS 7 installed on the iPhone 5s, so we suggest you read and move on to other questions.
Performance
iPhone 5c runs on the same SoC that was in the iPhone 5 - Apple A6. The processor frequency is 1.3 GHz, there are only two cores (although quad-core CPUs are already found even in budget devices). The GPU is PowerVR SGX543MP3. Volume RAM also remained unchanged compared to the iPhone 5 - 1 GB (which is again very little for a device with a retail price of more than 20 thousand rubles).
We've already tested the iPhone 5, so the iPhone 5c's results shouldn't come as a surprise to us, but we'll compare them to the Sony Xperia Z and Samsung Galaxy S4, and also show the iPhone 5s results side by side for clarity.
Let's start with browser tests: SunSpider 1.0, Octane Benchmark and Kraken Benchmark. In all cases, on Apple devices we used Safari browser from iOS 7, and on Android - Google Chrome.
As we can see, the iPhone 5c and iPhone 5 have the same results (taking into account the error), but the difference between the iPhone 5s and iPhone 5c is more than significant. As for competitors, the Samsung Galaxy S4 outperformed the iPhone 5c in one test, was inferior to it in another, but the Sony Xperia Z lost in all tests.
Now let's see how the iPhone 5c performs in Geekbench 2, a multi-platform benchmark that measures CPU and RAM performance.
Here, of course, the difference between the result and the iPhone 5 is surprising, but we must take into account that the iPhone 5 was tested on the previous version operating system, and the benchmark itself may have been updated. One way or another, Android competitors show significantly better results.
Left - iPhone 5s results, right - iPhone 5c
Here the difference between the iPhone 5c and 5s is no longer so striking, although it is still there, and quite significant.
Now let's look at the GPU performance. Here we have two multi-platform benchmarks available to us: GFXBench (formerly GLBenchmark 2.7) and 3DMark. Let's start with the GFXBench results.
Apple iPhone 5c (Apple A6) |
Apple iPhone 5 (Apple A6) |
Apple iPhone 5s (Apple A7) |
Samsung Galaxy S4 (Exynos 5410 Octa) |
|
GFXBench 2.7.2 T-Rex HD (C24Z16 Offscreen) | 6.8 fps | 6.6 fps | 25 fps | 11.7 fps |
GFXBench 2.7.2 T-Rex HD (C24Z16 Onscreen) | 13 fps | 13.6 fps | 27 fps | 12.9 fps |
GFXBench 2.7.2 T-Rex HD (C24Z16 Offscreen Fixed Timestep) | 6.8 fps | 6.6 fps | 23 fps | 11.3 fps |
GFXBench 2.7.2 T-Rex HD (C24Z16 Onscreen Fixed Timestep) | 14 fps | 13.8 fps | 26 fps | 11.3 fps |
GFXBench 2.7.2 Egypt HD (C24Z16) | 30 fps | 29.7 fps | 56 fps | 40.0 fps |
GFXBench 2.7.2 Egypt HD (C24Z16 Offscreen) | 37 fps | 40.4 fps | 48 fps | 38.1 fps |
It is clearly seen that in Offscreen modes (that is, when the picture is displayed with a fixed Full HD resolution), the Samsung Galaxy S4 smartphone beats the iPhone 5c and iPhone 5. In Onscreen modes (the picture is displayed in the current screen resolution), Apple devices with lower screen resolutions perform on par with the Samsung Galaxy S4, but the iPhone 5s wins in all variants.
Here the picture is even more clear: the iPhone 5c loses to everyone.
So, judging by the benchmarks, the performance of the iPhone 5c is insufficient compared to its competitors, although it cannot be said that this is some kind of failure level. And then, do not forget that applications from App Store in general, they use device resources more efficiently, since they are optimized for specific configurations (which is not possible on Android). So in practice, you're unlikely to feel any performance shortfall on the iPhone 5c, but once you update to iOS 8 when it comes out, you'll likely see a noticeable difference compared to the iPhone 5s. At least that's how things used to happen.
Autonomous operation
The battery capacity of the iPhone 5c, judging by unofficial information, has increased slightly compared to the iPhone 5, but it is slightly less than that of the iPhone 5s. Gaming tests show that this does not prevent the iPhone 5c from demonstrating a slightly longer time battery life than iPhone 5s. In GLBenchmark 2.5.1 in the Battery test, the iPhone 5c lasted (up to automatic shutdown) for about three hours, and in the Epic Citadel with the brightness set to 100 cd/m², it lasted for 3 hours 20 minutes.
On the other hand, in everyday use we didn't notice a significant difference in battery life compared to the iPhone 5 and iPhone 5s.
Note that when using GPU tests, the smartphone heated up much less than the iPhone 5 and iPhone 5s, and it was quite comfortable to hold it in your hands. This is understandable: a metal case should heat up more than a plastic one.
Fully charging the battery takes about two hours.
Communications and mobile internet
Here the situation for the iPhone 5c is identical to the iPhone 5s. WITH telephone communication everything is in order, but LTE does not work, although support for the corresponding frequencies is stated. Probably, the situation will change after the official release of the iPhone 5c on the Russian market, and then the iPhone 5c will have a significant advantage compared to the iPhone 5 (which has support for Russian LTE frequencies no in principle). But the situation with LTE is still unclear.
Camera
iPhone 5c is equipped with two cameras similar to iPhone 5. The rear camera has a resolution of 8 megapixels. Let's see what she can do.
After viewing the field photos, it seems that the iPhone 5c camera is somewhat different from the 5s and 5 cameras, although it would seem that it should be on par with the latter. However, its operation reveals some of the camera's peculiarities. budget smartphones. Well, it confirms the positioning of the smartphone for now.
The operation of the flash does not cause any complaints. When using a flash, the camera, as expected, shortens the shutter speed and reduces light sensitivity, due to which it gains good resolution.
The graph clearly shows that at first the cameras of the iPhone 5c (blue) and 5s (purple) are on par. However, in poor lighting there is a difference between them, and in the absence of it, the 5c fails altogether, despite the greater sensitivity of this image compared to the 5s image.
It would seem that the iPhone 5c camera should be similar to the iPhone 5 camera in terms of characteristics, but at the same time it loses to the iPhone 5s camera not only in numbers, but also visually in field tests. It is likely that the difference between these two cameras is determined by software processing, which for 5s was most likely worked out more carefully.
Well, in any case, the camera turned out to be quite good, but we must keep in mind that in the dark it does its job poorly.
Conclusions
Our conclusions will, on the one hand, be obvious and predictable, and on the other hand, we will note some details that are usually not paid attention to when talking about the iPhone 5c. At the same time, let’s try to understand why Apple needed to break the established product release system.
The iPhone 5c is identical in performance and camera to the iPhone 5, so in fact it's an iPhone 5 with a different body. There is no fingerprint sensor here, as in the iPhone 5s, there is no dual flash and other features of the new flagship. But, on the other hand, the iPhone 5c is nothing worse than iPhone 5, that is, you shouldn’t think that this is a completely budget device.
However, there are still some details (besides design) that distinguish the iPhone 5c from the iPhone 5. Firstly, this is hypothetical support for Russian LTE networks. Secondly, slightly longer battery life in high-load scenarios (3D games) and less (feels like) heating. Thirdly, the build quality of the screen, apparently, has deteriorated slightly compared to last year: this is evidenced by black dots on the matrix, invisible to the eye, but which are an indicative symptom. The iPhone 5s also has them, that is, this is not a difference between the more expensive and cheaper versions, but simply a slightly worse control over the assembly. In terms of consumer properties, the screens themselves are identical for all three iPhone 5 models.
Regarding iPhone design 5c, then the best recommendation here is to just come to the store, hold it in your hands and understand whether you want such a device or not. If you want, the price difference between it and the iPhone 5s will be a nice addition to the purchase (although not decisive, since it is only $100). If not, then you should definitely take the iPhone 5s or, if the main goal is to save money, the iPhone 5.
Now let's try to understand why Apple needs to replace the iPhone 5 new iPhone 5c, why couldn’t we do it as before - sell an older iPhone in parallel with the new model, but for $100 cheaper. Here, of course, we are entering the territory of speculation and assumptions, but it’s still worth thinking about. In addition to the obvious versions expressed in the introduction to the article (the lower cost of the iPhone 5c allows you to increase profits, and the multi-colored cases are designed to interest a new audience), the following hypothesis also seems possible to us. For a couple of years now, Apple has been having problems with the iPod touch and the iPod line in general. Their sales are falling because MP3 players, in principle, are rapidly going out of fashion. People prefer to have one device in their pocket, a smartphone, rather than two (smartphone and player). At the same time, the iPod has always been a more youthful product than the iPhone. The iPod is characterized by multi-colored cases. So, in past years, the iPod touch played the role of something like a budget iPhone, that is, an option for those who want the functionality of the iPhone as an Internet communicator, but are not willing to pay for a top-end smartphone. However, we must assume that the ratio of the cost of the iPod touch (for example, the fifth generation) and its price is not nearly as advantageous as the ratio of the price to the cost of any iPhone. Therefore, perhaps Apple simply decided to slowly begin to abandon the iPod touch line, replacing it with cheaper iPhones. However, whether it is true or not, we will find out later, when Apple releases or does not release a new generation of iPod.

The phone has been around for more than 5 years, and will soon be 6 years old. It’s a pity that Apple stopped supporting this device and now I can’t download many applications due to the outdated version of IOS. Ideal for a child or parent to buy now. I will be looking for something newer for myself, although the phone feels great.

Purchased this smartphone used for a second SIM card on a par with the main iPhone 5s. I wanted more budget option and just as small and light. I didn’t want to take the regular 5, since it has the same body, so I decided to take the 5c with the yellow cover. In general, Apple did a very original solution in terms of colors in this model. Whichever one you like, take it. In principle, for 2019, the 5c model is suitable as a second SIM card, or as a spare phone. 5s will still be faster.

At the moment it is not relevant for purchase, since Apple has stopped supporting the operating system and it is almost impossible to update the phone in the usual ways.

I’ve been using this phone for almost a year, before that I had a 4S for a year and a half, which worked perfectly until the release of iOS 7. After the 4S, this iPhone was very sad, not only does it cost more than the 4S, but also the quality of the body and various small things, which by default should be good with such a powerful operating system, a good camera and its other advantages, is disgusting. The plastic case gets noticeable scratches with any minor damage, in cracks and holes for connectors, etc. Uncleanable dirt is clogged from somewhere, the volume buttons are both stuck, the headphone jack is somehow broken so that now any headset for it is mono, and accordingly the quality of the music goes downhill, which is already disgusting with this small speaker that has already started " "crackle." Well, about the screen - that's a completely different story. It cracked on its own twice, and replacement cost 3,800 rubles for the matrix and glass at once, considering that I handle phones very carefully, and usually they end their life either by starting to become terribly glitchy, or simply becoming obsolete after 3-4 years. I don’t see any point in talking about iTunes; nothing has changed at Apple for centuries. The quality of communication on the iPhone has always lagged behind the quality of communication on other phones, BUT! 4G works very well, there are no complaints in this regard. Everything is clear about the lightning connector, there are two aspects here - they are expensive and “everyone has mini-usb.” However, despite these shortcomings, the speed of operation, the camera, the operating time, the image quality are still excellent. high level, as has always been the case with iPhones. From this we can conclude - hardware good (except for the speaker!), software too, the price seems decent, but the body is disgusting, although colorful. As a result, we get that this iPhone is short-lived and made like a cheap one, although it is an iPhone! For which he receives a hard troyban.

The camera (main) is really good at daylight. Not inferior to the average camera. Processor - no complaints found after 2 years of use. All programs work great. The only thing is that they start to slow down before the update software, but that's ok. Glass and body - fell on the asphalt and stairwell about 5 times, the glass was slightly warped, but not even visible, only to the touch. Battery - I charge it only 2 times a day (watching TV shows, social networks and browsing).

For anyone who wants to buy an iPhone for cheap, this is not an option at all. If you are buying for yourself, take at least SE or 7ku.

I used 5c for about 2.5 years, during which time I changed 2 of them. What can I say, I really liked the phone from the moment of purchase and did not cause any serious complaints before the sale. Of course, there are very good ergonomics, a nice case, various accessories for the iPhone are sold many times more than for any other models. But there are also many disadvantages - my phone was discharged within a day and with daily charging for a year the battery was seriously killed, the phone could turn off at 20% of the charge, which was seriously annoying. The battery in this model is really a weak point and changing it in a device of this class is impractical. The quality of accessories is not a problem for this particular model, this is a common problem for all apple products, the original headphones died in 3 months, the lightning cable died in 4 months. Moreover, with Chinese ones, it even seems like certified cables third-party manufacturers traditional problems, sometimes it works, sometimes it doesn’t. At the moment, the device is pretty outdated (32 gigs maximum, 4 inches) and is not particularly interesting as a smartphone, but it is quite good as a high-quality dialer. So I got rid of my cash and was pleasantly pleased with the liquidity on the secondary market; both devices were sold in a day and without any haggling.
I decided to take the Apple iPhone 5c as my main smartphone in December last year in order to independently evaluate and new iOS 7, and the company’s new approach, or rather, an attempt to create a smartphone not in the top segment, surprising everyone not only with quality, but also with price. I used the device as my main phone for almost two months - quite a long time for a person who changes smartphones almost weekly for work. And it is precisely on the basis of the experience gained during these two months that I want to tell you about my experience using the Apple iPhone 5c smartphone.
Design, body materials
The first thing I want to talk about is the design and materials from which the iPhone 5c is made. I will say this - in the picture the smartphone seemed very cute and pleasant to me, moreover, when I first received the device in a sealed box, with the smell characteristic of new electronics, the impression did not change at all. After I took the smartphone out of the box, removed the films from it and turned it on, I still saw a beautiful and neat smartphone in front of me, as if from a picture. The Apple iPhone 5c looks really cool, despite the plastic body.
But once you use the device for just a couple of hours or even less, the euphoria of the first positive impression is shattered by harsh reality.
The glossy plastic in the Apple iPhone 5c is completely impractical. The first and most glaring problem is greasy stains and fingerprints all over the body. Even if you wash your hands before each use of your smartphone (I’m not exaggerating), literally after five to ten minutes it is first covered with a barely noticeable layer of fingerprints, and then simply becomes stained. The case has to be constantly wiped, otherwise using the smartphone is simply unpleasant.
The second problem is micro-scratches. On my sample they appeared after about a week of use, and then they became more and more numerous. Of course, these scratches are almost invisible, but if you bought a smartphone for 25,000 rubles, which is how much the 5c 16 GB version costs on the official website, then it’s simply a shame to see such a defect a few days after you start using the device.
And a few more words about the branded case “with holes.” As with the smartphone itself, the case looks cool in photos but turns out to be completely impractical in reality. Made of soft rubber, it, firstly, quickly becomes covered with dust particles, hairs and other microparticles flying in the air, and secondly, it sticks to the fabric in pockets, and it becomes difficult to remove a smartphone in a case from a jeans pocket, for example.
Dimensions
This is where I personally have absolutely nothing to object to, and that is when talking about the dimensions of the Apple iPhone 5c. In my opinion, the dimensions of the entire fifth iPhone series are ideal, and the lack of screen diagonal is compensated by the overall harmony of dimensions: body width, height and comfortable thickness, when the smartphone is not as thick as a brick, but not as thin as a sheet of paper. In this regard, I like the approach of Apple, which strives to maintain the minimum dimensions of the device to the last, despite the race of diagonals that has unfolded around it. I'm sure many are waiting for the Apple iPhone 6 with a 5" or so diagonal screen, but personally it seems to me that maintaining dimensions is one of the strengths of Apple smartphones.
Thanks to the dimensions of the iPhone 5c, it is convenient to hold and generally use it with one hand, it is comfortable to talk on it for a long time, and it is convenient to carry it in any pocket. The dimensions of the device are excellent.
Screen
Another point on which I have no complaints about the smartphone, although more and more often you can see reviews from users of current Apple devices that it’s time for the company to increase the screen diagonal. In my opinion, everything is in order with the diagonal and resolution of the fifth series - exactly the ratio is maintained in which the dimensions of the device are not yet excessively large, and the relatively low resolution does not give rise to talk about the overall graininess of the picture.
In addition, the matrix itself used in the Apple iPhone 5c is exactly the same as in the iPhone 5 - that is, of high quality. Hence the maximum viewing angles, calm and natural color rendition, except that, for my taste, warm tones slightly prevail, but this is a personal opinion, and nothing more.
Control
Separately, I would like to mention the hardware keys that are present in the Apple iPhone 5c (and any other smartphone from the company) and are increasingly absent from Android smartphones. For example, I, as a person who should have already gotten used to the absence of hardware keys under the screen (with the exception of some Samsung smartphones), really like this button in the iPhone 5c. With its help, it is convenient to return to the main screen, unlock the smartphone without trying to reach the key on the top end, and call the manager of the most recently running programs.
And I also can’t help but note the silent mode lever. A very convenient thing that I used all the time and which I now miss on Android smartphones.
Among the minuses, I would like to note the implementation of a tray for a nanoSIM card. It seems to be made neatly, and there is almost no gap between it and the body, but dirt and dust still gets clogged there, and after a couple of weeks this element looks sloppy.
Performance
It so happened that smartphones on iOS “since ancient times” worked very quickly and smoothly, while smartphones on Android had slowdowns and lags. The reasons for this situation are clear and have not been a secret for a long time. Apple, by developing both its devices and its OS, can perfectly optimize both components and make them work with each other. With Andorid, everything is much more complicated - there is one system, hardware manufacturers, only large ones, dozens, and hundreds more small ones, many configurations, device options - all this seriously complicates the optimization of the system, and, as a result, such lags appear, sometimes even on top smartphones . However, in 2012-2013 the situation began to change, and although Apple devices still have not lost the status of being fast and bug-free, my experience using the iPhone 5c shows that iOS now is not at all the lightning-fast and super-stable system that it still sometimes is describe.
Sometimes programs open in a couple of seconds, there are freezes and delays in displaying the interface, it happens that the smartphone just thinks for a second or two or the program reboots (this happened to me with Yandex.Maps several times). Switching from one application to another also does not happen instantly, that is, the system itself, in terms of operating speed, in my opinion, is no different from how Android behaves on HTC One, For example. Exactly the same mini-delays, sometimes pauses in the display of programs, interface jitters - all this is present in the iPhone 5c. Another thing is that you quickly get used to these little things, just like the owners of Android devices get used to them? and you just stop noticing them.
Opening hours
Another myth that I was in the grip of when I first took the Apple iPhone 5c for this article. Based on reviews and reviews of Apple smartphones, I have the opinion that the company’s devices work for one and a half to two days in active mode and are simply head and shoulders above their Android counterparts. I thought like this: “since the reviews are so positive, it means that in my typical scenario of using the phone, 1 hour of calls, 10-20 messages, correspondence on WhatsApp, using Instagram, Twitter and 3-4 hours of music, the device will work all day.” For example, HTC One works for me in this mode for about 15-20 hours, that is, the device removed from charging in the morning survives until the evening or even night.
Imagine my disappointment when the Apple iPhone 5c, with the same rhythm of use, ran out of charge at 3 p.m. And this is a phone taken off charge at 10 am. Disabling the geolocation service increased the operating time by a couple of hours, but the indicator still remained at the level of the worst Android smartphones, if we are talking about models costing from 20,000 rubles. In my usage scenario, the Apple iPhone 5c ends up lasting an average of 5-8 hours, which is incredibly poor.
Camera
Reverse example, when I have nothing bad to say - the camera in the iPhone 5c. The smartphone “borrowed” the camera module from the previous top model – iPhone 5, where the camera was one of the best on the market. So, the 5s camera is excellent - white balance is well defined in almost all situations, good detail, equally high-quality pictures in different conditions: during the day in sunny weather, in rain, when it’s cloudy and even at night. Taking photographs with a smartphone is a pleasure; I’m pleased not only with the overall quality of the images, but also with the simple, no-nonsense interface, as well as the overall speed of the camera.
iOS 7
I liked the main screen, which is also the program menu and everything else. In this regard, many Android manufacturers are now trying to copy iOS, removing a separate application menu from the shells and leaving only a desktop with multiple screens.
The notification curtain, called up from above, is, in my opinion, of little use. Firstly, because it is impossible to display a lot of information there, only strictly specified data, if we are talking about the weather, stock quotes, etc.). Secondly, because notifications accumulate and to delete them you must first click the “cross” and then confirm the deletion. However, displaying notifications for different programs Customizable, so the curtain can be changed to suit your requirements.
About address book there is nothing special to tell - it is very simple in iOS, there is no way to quickly search for a contact using the numeric keypad, there is no normal display of photos on at least half the screen (not only during incoming call) No.
The lock screen, in the best traditions of iOS, is very simple, and this is also not easy to get used to after Android, where every second manufacturer equips their smartphones with a lock screen with the ability to quickly switch to basic applications or even any installed programs.
I would also like to touch on the sad topic of third-party programs replacing basic ones. So, it’s no secret that iOS has Gmail and Chrome, Google’s proprietary browser, which many use both on PCs and smartphones. And while Gmail on iOS works quite well and even looks beautiful, the same cannot be said about Chrome. Unlike the proprietary browser for iOS, Safari, the Google program works slowly, pages take longer to open, scrolling with lags and twitches, and there is no smooth interface when working in Grome on iOS. At the same time the same number open tabs in Safari – and the browser literally “flies”. For me, as a Chrome user, such discrimination (I don’t know whether Chrome is poorly made for iOS, or whether the system is basically designed for its own browser) is insulting; I’m not ready to switch to Safari even for the sake of speed, so I had to put up with the brakes of Chrome "
The general flatness of the interface and its iridescence are, of course, a little surprising at first, and it seems that it will be difficult to get used to it, but only a couple of days pass and the interface no longer seems strange, you begin to like the thin, neat fonts, as well as the entire appearance of the system as a whole .
I don't know how to describe it most accurately, but my experience with Android and iOS is completely different. If the first system looks like something massive with many possibilities, then the second one looks like a limited, neatly assembled tool for solving a number of problems. That is, when I use an Android smartphone, every now and then I have the desire to install something besides the standard software, check some things, settings, change the appearance, and so on. In words this is called a wide range of settings and the possibility of “customization”; in practice, I personally actually had such urges to tinker with and change something when using Android.
iOS is a completely different matter. While I was using the Apple iPhone 5c for two months, the device was used mainly for calls, mail, WhatsApp, Internet and sometimes photography. All. Of course, I myself understand perfectly well how this is a good indicator of a neat, polished system in which everything works, but overall I was left with the feeling that I had been using a phone with additional functions, not a smartphone. Moreover, this is precisely at the level of personal impressions.
Keyboard
In a separate paragraph, I’ll tell you about the wonderful, super convenient, incredibly fast keyboard in iOS. For me it turned out to be completely inconvenient for two reasons. The first is that there is not even the smallest vibration response to touch, but I have already gotten used to this little thing. Second - no quick access to additional characters, even to enter a comma you need to perform unnecessary actions, not to mention the characters a little more complex. In my opinion, this is crazy for a smartphone keyboard in 2013-2014. In this case, the simplicity of iOS is clearly not beneficial for convenience.
As for the highest speed of the keyboard, yes, this is true, but for me personally this advantage alone was not enough for comfortable work with her.
Conclusion
On the official Apple website, the smartphone costs 24,990 rubles (16 GB) or 29,990 rubles (32 GB), the Yandex.Market service gives a more gentle average cost, about 21,000 rubles. In both cases, the price is very high for a smartphone, the advantages of which are good camera, easy to learn OS and good sound. The remaining points, in my opinion, are very controversial, these are the low-resolution screen, the plastic, impractical body, and record-breaking low battery life. Yes, there are good things about the iPhone 5c. But they are also typical for any other smartphone in the fifth series, and it is possible to find a regular iPhone 5 on sale, although it is not easy.
It turns out that an overall good smartphone is simply greatly overrated, and in this case Apple’s magic practically does not work. Appearance and the materials of the iPhone 5c played a cruel joke on it; the device does not live up to the declared cost and even the price of around 20,000 rubles. If you asked me which new iPhone to take, I would immediately advise either looking towards the top-end but expensive iPhone 5S, or trying to find the usual “five”, but it’s better not to even look at the iPhone 5c, perhaps this is the most controversial smartphone companies for all time.
The editors express gratitude to the online store Computer Plaza www.cplaza.ru for providing the device for testing.
