Why can't I connect to the mail server? Cannot send or receive messages for your email account. Reason: The network requires a proxy server to connect to the mail server
While talking in my articles about collecting mail, I remembered the nuances of collecting specifically from the GMail mail service. The fact is that it is with this mail service that problems most often arise during mail collection. All because of its powerful security, which sometimes reaches the level of insanity :) I, of course, am only FOR high security of any services, but in the case of GMail this sometimes goes beyond all limits. For example, we are trying to collect mail from our Gmail inbox, but the process does not work because Google blocks the connection attempt for no particular reason. Having encountered several times similar problem, decided to write about the reasons for the occurrence, possible options problems and ways to solve them.
Problems that often arise when collecting letters from GMail mailboxes and their solutions
When collecting letters from any Gmail mailboxes, very often users encounter an error “The server has denied POP3 access for the given username and password.”.
Below we will look at 2 main problems that can cause such an error and how to fix them.
Of course, such an error can also occur due to an incorrectly entered login and password for the second mail. As trivial as it may be, make sure you enter this information correctly!
Problem #1. Access via POP3 protocol is not enabled in the connected Gmail mailbox
Before digging into security, you need to make sure that POP access is enabled in your connected mailbox in the settings.
To check whether POP access is enabled, go to the mail settings (gear button) and on the “Forwarding and POP/IMAP” tab, in the “POP access” section, check the “Enable POP for all emails” option.
If this function is not enabled there, then you will not be able to connect the box! If POP access is enabled, then look further...
Problem #2. Blocking access to connected mail for Google security reasons
Typically, access to the connected mail may be blocked due to a suspicious location from which the second mail is being logged in and/or due to a suspicious application from which the login is being performed. Everything would be clear if Google’s system always worked correctly. But very often it happens that access is blocked and the connected one receives a message about access being blocked, while some strange location is indicated (for example, New York) and an unsafe application is reported. Example letter:
And this despite the fact that the entrance to the second box is performed from exactly the same computer as the main one, the location is the same (obviously not the USA), and at the same time there can be no talk of any application, especially unsafe :) That is. Google can be 100% wrong about the location, and also about the fact that you are trying to access your mail through some application.
I encountered a similar problem several times and in all cases the location was determined incorrectly and there were no programs installed on the computer that somehow replaced the IP address, which could change the location.
Solution
First of all, if access to connected mail is blocked, you need to:
Conclusion
These are the nuances that can occur when setting up the collection of mail from Gmail mailboxes. The collection process itself is simple, there are no complicated settings, as in any other services, but security often gets “naughty,” crosses the line and causes inconvenience. I hope the information in this article helps someone.
Solution: Connect your computer to the Internet or network.
Open your web browser to see if you can access sites on the Internet. If you are in local network, check if intranet sites can be opened. Learn how to check status network connections, see Mac OS Help.
Solution: Make sure Outlook is connected to the Internet.
On the menu Outlook see if the checkbox is unchecked Autonomous operation.
Cause: Some POP and IMAP email accounts use an outgoing mail server (SMTP) that requires authentication.
Solution: enable SMTP authentication for account POP or IMAP.
Some services email, including iCloud email accounts, require authentication to their SMTP server. If you verify that all account settings are correct, but you are still unable to send messages, try disabling SMTP authentication.
On the menu Service select accounts.
Accounts select an account.
In the section SMTP server select More options ...
In the popup menu Authentication Select an authentication type and enter the required credentials.
Cause: Your ISP or network administrator is using a firewall that is blocking connections to the outgoing mail server (SMTP) of your email service.
Solution: Find out if your ISP or network administrator can provide an alternative SMTP server for your POP or IMAP account.
If you have an alternate SMTP server address, specify it in your account settings.
On the menu Service select accounts.
In the left area of the dialog box Accounts select an account.
In the field outgoing mail server enter the server name or address.
Note: When using a laptop in multiple locations, such as at home and at work, the SMTP server that is used in one location may not work in other locations. Everyone to the Internet, with which you may have a firewall with restrictions of your own.
Cause: The account credentials or settings are incorrect.
Solution: Please check that your username, password and other account settings are correct.
On the menu Service select accounts.
In the left area of the dialog box Accounts select an account.
Make sure you have entered the correct email address, username and password.
If your account is still not working properly, contact your email service provider to find out how to set up your account in your email app. Your account may need to use specific settings, such as apply SSL protocol to connect or override the default port.
Cause: The network requires a proxy server to connect to the mail server.
Solution: specify the mail proxy server in the " section System Settings"on the computer.
If you use networks to connect to the Internet, you may need to specify a mail proxy server. Contact your network administrator for the correct settings for your mail proxy. For instructions on how to enter these parameters, see Help. Mac system OS.
Reason: The email server is unavailable.
Solution: check if the mail server is running.
If you have successfully connected to this account before, the problem may be that the mail server is down. Contact your email service provider or network administrator to see if your email server is running.
The causes of some mail server errors are easy to find, while others will require careful troubleshooting of your mail server settings. This article is intended to help you find and resolve such errors.

Sometimes errors occur in the operation of email. Most often they manifest themselves in the fact that users cannot send or receive an email and receive the message “Could not connect to mail server" The causes of some mail server errors are easy to find, while others will require careful troubleshooting of your mail server settings. This article is intended to help you find and resolve such errors.
Step-by-step check of the mail server
First of all, you need to make sure that the problem is on the server and not somewhere else. To do this, try sending yourself a few test emails to the same email address and to external email services such as Gmail. If you successfully receive a test email, then reply to it to test sending and receiving mail.
- If you immediately receive an error message about connecting to the mail server, as soon as you tried to send or receive a letter, this indicates that the problem is really with the server. Note the error code, then we will tell you more about them.
- The letter was sent but then returned, you received a so-called bounced message - a message that the letter was not delivered for some reason. Most often, this reason is indicated in the text of the message (for example, the letter is too similar to spam or the imap mail mail server is not responding), try to eliminate it.
- Mail server is not responding, there were no errors when sending, but you did not receive the letter for several minutes. First of all, check your Spam folder, it may have ended up there. If not, double-check your email client settings.
- If you send and receive test emails without problems, most likely the problem is not with the mail server, but with the network.
These services try to connect to your mail server via SMTP, measure the response time, confirm that it has a return record DNS zones mail server. With their help, you can diagnose some mail server service errors or check whether your mail server is blacklisted due to spam.
Mail server error codes and how to resolve these errors:
Mail server error 421
- the problem may occur due to incorrectly configured SMTP connection parameters, double-check their settings
- blocks the email server IP, in this case you need to add a new rule for it
- traffic through port 25 is blocked. Try changing the SMTP port number to 465 in your email account settings
- the error is caused by using a VPN - try turning off the VPN and sending an email. If this was the problem, then it is necessary for the service provider to list your mail server in whitelist VPN addresses
The mail server responded with 451
Possible reasons:
- the number of allowed connections or the message exchange limit for a period of time has been exceeded, in which case the letters are simply waiting in the sending queue. You can increase this limit or set a limit not on the number of connections to the server, but on the number of letters per user. If you have not detected any malicious activity, you can send the accumulated queue of letters using the force send command.
- incorrectly configured MX records of the domain and incorrect routing of letters as a result. Check the logs, configuration files, MX records and permissions to determine the cause of the error
Mail server error 452
- The error is probably not on your side - the recipient's server has run out of space, so the letter is not delivered. Check if you can send emails to other servers
- If the error message contains the text “Out of memory”, then there is not enough space on your server. Check the number of letters in the queue, free space on disk and the amount of available memory
Mail server error 550
- The recipient's email address is incorrect, check whether it is valid and whether you wrote it correctly
- incorrect SMTP server settings
- there is a suspicion that your system is infected with a virus that automatically sends letters. Scan with a specialized antivirus, for example, for mail servers
- The provider has set restrictions on outgoing messages. Contact your provider's technical support and they will tell you what to do in this case.
The mail server responded with 571
Error when receiving mail (on the recipient's side). Reasons:
- The sender's IP is blocked on the recipient's side by a spam filter, antivirus or firewall, the text of the error message will be similar to this: “The mail server responded: spam message rejected.” If you are sending a test email to yourself, try disabling this software and check sending/receiving emails without it
- the sender's IP does not have RDNS
- the sender is included in the spam list, the recipient's message filters do not allow the message to pass through
To resolve the error, check your email receipt settings and especially the permissions for sending domains.
Mail server certificate is invalid
Check to see if it's time to renew your certificates.
