How to turn off your computer after a certain time
The Windows operating system is the most widespread in the world and it is probably quite difficult to find a user who has never worked in it. However, many people do not know about this OS tool called Shutdown. The command issued with its help allows you to shut down or restart the computer according to a schedule or remotely. We will tell you how to use this useful tool correctly in this article.
Windows Command Line
The command line interface in the Windows operating system is implemented using two programs. The first is Cmd.exe, present in all versions of the NT family of operating systems, and the second, which first appeared in Windows 7, is more modern and flexible - PowerShell. The peculiarity of their use is the direct input of text commands, without using a graphical interface.
Modern users, accustomed to working in windowed mode using a mouse, do not pay too much attention to the command line. However, the method may not be very fast, but in some cases it is extremely effective. The toolkit contains over one and a half hundred useful commands, the capabilities of which can be expanded by using additional keys.
Shutdown command parameters associated with control keys can be viewed by entering in the management console:
shutdown
The output result will contain full list keys for local and network operation, as well as a list of digital notification codes transmitted by this command to the user of the remote computer.
Shutdown.exe and windowed mode
To call the graphical interface that Shutdown has, the execution command must be entered with the “/i” switch. Oddly enough, the program running from the command line in this case opens a window familiar to the user. It's called "Remote Shutdown Dialogue".
This interface is intended to be used for remote administration of computers belonging to a domain. The selection of machines on the network is carried out at the top of the window. You can then set the type of shutdown and the notification that the remote user will receive. In this case, the choice can be made between planned and unscheduled work related to hardware maintenance or software updates.
Network control keys
Let's go back a little and see what capabilities the Shutdown command gets when using keys. Windows 7 and newer versions can work with it both through the old console and through the PowerShell interface. The syntax of the commands in it has remained virtually unchanged, even expanding through the use of new ones, similar to those used in the Linux command line.
So, the control key is entered with a space behind the main text and separated from it by a slash “/”. Below we provide the keys used for remote control computers and deciphering their actions:
/ m\\"computer name"
Accessing a remote machine. Enter or domain name, or IP address, without quotes.
The field can contain up to 512 characters and is intended to convey to the remote user a comment about the reasons for shutdown or reboot.
/ f
Forced, without warning, termination of all running applications.
/t xxxxxxxxxx
Delay time in seconds before the command is triggered. Allows you to set a time period ranging from zero seconds to one year. In seconds this is 31536000.
/ d[p|u:]xx:yy
Makes it possible to specify the type of event, choosing from three categories - planned, unplanned, expected. Additional parameters xx and yy contain digital reason codes from the system event directory.
Canceling a command
Not a single person, not even system administrator, cannot be one hundred percent immune from errors. And in this case, the question arises: is it possible and how to cancel the Shutdown command sent to the remote machine by mistake or with the wrong key? Microsoft has provided this possibility.
It is possible to cancel any action, including an incorrectly specified one, but only if, when issuing the command, a delay parameter for its execution was specified. Before the selected period of time has expired, the administrator can reissue the command to the remote computer shutdown/a. In this case, any pre-planned action will be canceled.
This method works for both local and remote computers. On a local machine, having received a warning about an impending action, you will have to issue a command in the console to cancel it. Successful execution will be confirmed by a pop-up message in the notification area.
Local control keys
The capabilities of this team are not limited to working only with remote computers. You can also use Shutdown Windows on your local computer. In this case, the command is specified in text mode through the control console. The keys for controlling the local machine and a description of their actions are given below:
/ l
Ending a session current user systems.
/ s
Shutdown and shutdown.
/ r
Shutdown and then reboot.
/ g
Shutdown, reboot and restart local computer with all previously opened applications.
/ p
Immediate shutdown without warning.
/ h
Switching the local computer to energy-saving mode.
As you can see, the set of commands for separate computer is also quite large and allows you to shutdown, reboot and put into sleep mode. In this case, simultaneous use of several keys is allowed.
Task Scheduler
In addition to working with command line, it is possible to create a rule using the task scheduler and the Shutdown function. The command, with the necessary keys, in this case is specified in the interface Windows scheduler. This program is located in the “Standard - Utilities” group of the main menu operating system. To enter a task, you will need to run it as a system administrator.
Select “Create simple task» and fill in the fields that will open to us as we complete it. These steps will prompt you to name the new scheduled activity and set its schedule. Having reached the step in which we need to specify the program, we will enter our command in the field and specify the necessary arguments. The syntax for entering keys in this case is slightly different. Instead of a slash, they are preceded by a hyphen.
For example, by specifying the -s and -t arguments we get an analogue of shutdown /s /t. A command executed according to the schedule created in this way will lead to the computer shutting down after 30 seconds, during which we will see a warning window.
In conclusion
Now, if you wish, you can independently create shutdown or maintenance rules for your computer using Shutdown. The team, as you noticed, is very flexible and has a sufficient number of control keys to satisfy the needs of both a simple user and a network administrator.
Today there is a sufficient amount of software with which we can control the automatic turning on of the computer according to a schedule. But I want to note that automatic switching on PC using programs is possible only when it is in “sleep” mode.
That is, a computer that is in “sleep mode,” as it would be easier to say, is already turned on. It simply “wakes up” and does not turn on.
It turns out (I was ashamed not to know this :)), you can configure the computer to automatically turn on according to a schedule and even when it is COMPLETELY OFF! Modern BIOSes that come with PC motherboards have settings to automatically turn on a switched off computer according to a schedule.
At the beginning of my acquaintance with computers (since 1995), such a setting in the BIOS could only be dreamed of. For what purposes you can use turning on the computer automatically is up to you to decide.
For example, from the most banal - using a PC as an alarm clock, turning it on to distribute or download torrents while you are away, servicing your computer, or even when you are at work or on a business trip, etc.
I note that the fourth computer I tested, purchased 6 years ago, did not yet have this capability. Let's now move directly to the BIOS settings.
How to enter the BIOS depends on your configuration motherboard, mainly by pressing the Delete or F2 key on the keyboard at the initial stage of booting the computer. You can see a hint on the required keys immediately when you turn on the PC.
AUTOMATICALLY TURNING ON THE COMPUTER
BIOS American Megatrends Inc. P1.80, 05/20/2011. Go to the “Advanced” section and select “ACPI Configuration”.
Turn on the “Restore on AC/Power Loss” setting to the “Power On” position.
We activate (“Enabled”) the auto-on setting “RTC Alarm Power On”.
We select to turn on the computer every day (“Every Day”) or on a certain date within the current month in the “RTC Alarm Date Every Day” settings. We configure the time to turn on the PC: “hour/minute/second” in “RTC Alarm Time”.
After completing the settings, press the F10 key or the “Save Changes and Exit” and “OK” item to save the settings and restart the PC.
BIOS American Megatrends Inc. V4.3, 10/21/2009. We need the “Power Management Setup” section, go to it.
Turn on the “Restore On AC Power Loss” setting to the “On” position.
Activate “Resume By RTC Alarm”.
We set the activation for every day or on a certain date of the month in the “Data” setting and hours/minutes/seconds in “HH:MM:SS”.
Save the settings and exit the BIOS using F10.
BIOS American Megatrends Inc. 0401, 05/05/2010. In the “Power” section, go to “ARM Configuration”.
We activate “Restore on AC Power Loss” to the “Power On” position.
Activate “Power On By RTC Alarm”.
Settings for daily activation at certain hours/minutes/seconds become available.
Or a specific date, hours/minutes/seconds.
If you no longer need to automatically turn on your computer on a schedule, simply disable (“Disabled”) the “Power On By RTC Alarm” setting.
Unfortunately, these are all the BIOS versions on which I was able to test the function of automatically turning on the computer. If you have another basic system input/output (BIOS), then you will already know where to dig. And finally, I suggest you watch a short video
In Windows 10, the approach to updating the system has changed dramatically, and therefore the customization options automatic update greatly reduced. Additionally, the available settings depend on the edition of Windows you are using.
So in Windows 10 Home, all new features, updates and security updates are installed with Windows Update, while the user does not have any control over the update process. The only thing the user can do is postpone the reboot for a while. The Pro edition is more humane and allows you to manage some update settings - select the update source, set a schedule, and defer the installation of updates (except security updates) for a long time. The ability to completely disable automatic updates is not provided in any of the editions in principle.
Of course, automatic updating is an important component operating system, and regular downloading and installation of updates, especially critical patches and security updates, is necessary for the stable and secure operation of the system. However, the user must be able to choose when, how, and what updates to download and install. And even the ability to turn it off completely automatic check There should also be availability of updates. How to realize this opportunity will be discussed further.
I will try to describe all the ways I know to manage automatic updates in Windows 10. Let's start with the simplest and most accessible.
Windows Update
In Windows 10, the familiar classic “Windows Update” has been permanently removed from the Control Panel and is no longer available. New center The update is located in the system settings section and to open it you need to go to the Start menu and go to Settings - Update and Security.
In the main window of the Update Center there is practically no choice; you can only view the list of available updates and information about them.
The only available setting allows you to select the time for a mandatory reboot. Here you can specify the desired day and time of reboot, or reboot immediately, so as not to suffer for a long time :)
In the advanced settings, you can choose how updates will be installed. True, the choice is limited and consists of only two options:
Automatic - updates are automatically downloaded and installed, followed by automatic reboot;
Notify when a reboot is scheduled - downloading and installing updates also occurs automatically, but the reboot can be scheduled at a time convenient for you.
You can also enable the “Delay updates” option, which allows you to disable the download and installation of updates for a while. This option is aimed primarily at corporate users and is intended to give them the opportunity to test new functionality (which may now be included in updates) before its mass implementation in the organization. Users of the Home edition do not have this option, so they unwittingly act as testers 🙂 for the corporate sector.
Deferred updates do not include critical fixes and security updates, which will be installed automatically in any case. The exact period for which updates are delayed is unknown; various sources provide figures ranging from several days to several months.
Another interesting point. Windows 10 has a new update delivery mechanism (Windows Update Delivery Optimisation), based on P2P technology. Simply put, after downloading updates from the Windows Update servers, your computer begins distributing them to other devices on the network, similar to a torrent client.
This feature is enabled by default and to disable it, click on the “Choose how and when to receive updates” link and set the slider to Off.
You can view installed updates in the Control Panel by going to the “Programs and Features” - “Installed Updates” section. If problems arise after the update, then here is any of the installed updates can be deleted.
Disable automatic driver updates
Updates in Windows 8.1, 10 can be disabled (for example, stop the Windows Update service, but blocking is not always desirable). If you want to update your system and still have full control, you should configure Windows Update settings. Thanks to this, you can prevent situations where the system unexpectedly begins to automatically reboot, just at the most inopportune moment.
How to get Windows Update notifications about reboots
Open the Start menu and select Settings (gear icon). Then go to the Update & Security section. Open the Center tab Windows updates. On the right side, find and open the Restart Options tab.
Here, scroll down to the bottom of the window and go to the Show other notifications tab. This function is responsible for displaying notifications before automatic reboot Windows 10.
Switch the function to the "On" position. This way, you can postpone the automatic reboot - the system will send a notification before it starts, which will allow you to save, for example, open documents.
How to disable reboot during active period
Another condition by which you can disable rebooting is setting the so-called activity period. It allows you to set a time range during which the system will not automatically restart. The center takes this setting into account, and even if an update is downloaded, the restart will be disabled while the computer is actively used.
To disable it during the active period, open the Start menu, select Settings, then go to Update and Security - Windows Update. On the list available options select "Change activity period."
Here you can enter the time you actively used your PC. The default range is from 8:00 to 17:00. This means that the system will not restart during this time. This range can be changed.
The maximum range during which the reboot can be disabled is 18 hours, that is, for example, from 8:00 to 2:00, or from 10:00 to 4:00.
How to completely disable automatic system restart in Windows 10
The activity period mode is very convenient for daily use, but has the indicated disadvantage - the maximum period is 18 hours. Microsoft implemented this restriction to provide a 24-hour window of opportunity to update your system outside of the active period.
But if you need to leave the computer turned on overnight and to be sure that it will not reboot during this time, then you need to completely disable automatic reboot. This can be done using the RebootBlocker utility.
➜ Launch the local editor group policy (Win+R, enter gpedit.msc)
➜ Go to “Computer Configuration” - “Administrative Templates” - “ Windows components" - "Windows Update" and double-click on the option "Don't automatically restart when automatic installation updates if there are users in the system."
➜ Set the value "Enabled" for the parameter and apply the settings you made.
3. In the Windows 10 Registry Editor (For home version)
➜ Launch Registry Editor ( Win+R, enter regedit)
➜ Go to the registry key (folders on the left) HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Policies\Microsoft\Windows\WindowsUpdate\AU(if the AU “folder” is missing, create it inside the WindowsUpdate section by clicking on it right click mice).
➜ Right-click on the right side of the Registry Editor and select New parameter DWORD.
➜ Set a name NoAutoRebootWithLoggedOnUsers for this parameter.
➜ Click on the parameter twice and set value 1
4. Disabling reboots using the Task Scheduler
➜ Launch the task scheduler (use search in the taskbar or Win+R keys, and enter control schedtasks in the Run window)
➜ Navigate to the Task Scheduler Library - Microsoft - Windows - UpdateOrchestrator folder.
➜ Right-click on the task named Reboot in the task list and select “Disable” from the context menu.
There will be no automatic reboot to install updates in the future. In this case, updates will be installed when you restart your computer or laptop manually.

Personal computers can now be found in almost any apartment. They are used for relaxation and work, for communication and games, for watching videos and listening to music. The computer can also be easily turned into a TV with the functions of recording programs on a schedule, viewing any available channels.
You will need
- - computer;
- - TV tuner.
Instructions
Buy a TV tuner. They are divided into two main types: computer-dependent and stand-alone. Of course, it is much more convenient to have an independent TV tuner - you do not need to turn on the computer every time you want to watch. However, they usually cost more.
Connect the TV tuner to your computer following the included instructions. If you purchased the internal TV tuner as a board, you will need to open system unit and install the board in one of the PCI slots. If the TV is , use the connection cable (it is also included in the kit). It is also worth considering the fact that internal devices do not take up extra space, and are easily installed in the system unit of a personal computer.
Turn on your computer and install the drivers for the TV tuner from the disk. Together with the drivers, a special program will be installed into the operating system, made in the form of a virtual one. With this program you will watch television channels.
Launch the TV tuner program and enable auto-search for channels. When the search is complete, place all the programs in a convenient order and give them names. Place the transmitter for the remote control on the table and watch TV directly on computer. You can set a schedule for the virtual TV to turn on and record selected programs for a specified time. You can then view the recording at a time convenient for you.
In general, we can say that the TV tuner is very useful on computer, since you can watch hundreds of channels in real time, record various videos and much more. It is also worth noting that a large number of different ones can be connected to the TV tuner, which allow you to easily view both Russian and foreign channels.

Tip 6: How to set your computer to turn on automatically
Today there are so many software products that we can safely say “A computer can do almost anything!” If you need to regularly start your computer to perform certain tasks, check out the Auto-Power-on-Shut-down program.
You will need
- Software Auto-Power-on-Shut-down.
Instructions
How often have you had to get up in the morning to turn on your computer, for example, to start downloading, and then go back to bed. Now you don’t need this, this program will do everything for you. The only condition is . To download the utility, go to the official website of the program at the Internet address http://lifsoft.com and click the Download button. Specify a save location on your hard drive and press Enter.
At the last stage of installation, check the box next to “Run the program” and click the “Finish” button. Double-click the desktop shortcut to launch the utility. In the main program window, click the Evaluate button, because The program is shareware. Go to the Options tab and in the drop-down list window, select “Russian” and click the “Apply” button.
Using the task scheduler, you can not only activate the option to turn off, but also turn on the computer by minute, force it to turn on various programs, go online, etc. Click the “Create” button, enter a name for the task and select any option, setting absolutely any time.
To create a kind of alarm clock, you need to check the “Enable” option in the “Actions” block. Just below, check the “Open file” checkbox and specify the path to the file. As a file, you can select not only a song from your favorite artist, but also a rooster or any video clip.
Then set the time and days on which it will trigger this function. For each event, you can assign your own melody, as well as text displayed on the screen, for example, “Today is your birthday!” or “Are you talking about the exam?”
There can be quite a lot of situations when you need to automatically turn on your computer. Someone is trying to configure the receipt of updates for the system, someone starts downloading torrents, considering the time to turn on the PC the most suitable for the minimum fee for traffic, and for someone turning on the terminal or laptop is necessary for the alarm to go off, etc. Next, several will be considered methods that allow you to set up automatic computer startup on a schedule. There are at least three methods used: using the settings of the primary BIOS/UEFI systems, operating tools Windows systems and specialized programs from third-party developers, which, however, have much great opportunities, rather than standard means and tools.
Automatically turning on the computer: user misconceptions
But before moving on to the main topic, it’s worth saying a few words about the most common misconceptions that exist among ordinary users.
For some reason, many people believe that such settings can only be made if the stationary terminal or laptop is in sleep mode or in hibernation mode.
Nothing of the kind! In such modes, the computer is clearly not in the off state, and the process of turning it on is nothing more than waking up from sleep. But how can you configure the computer to automatically turn on at a time if it is completely turned off? For stationary PCs, the main condition is the availability of power (the terminal must not be disconnected from the power supply). With laptops, the situation is much simpler, since they are powered by an internal battery, and you can disconnect them from the network completely painlessly, but only if the battery is fully or at least partially charged.
How to set the computer to turn on automatically in the BIOS
First, let's look at ways to set the necessary parameters in primary systems. BIOS Settings slightly different from the parameters more modern systems UEFI.
So, the first thing when you turn on your PC or laptop is to log in using the keys or their combinations (for laptops they can vary quite a lot, but for stationary terminals the Del key is mainly used). The combination you are using will appear briefly on the start screen.
Typically, turning on your computer automatically can be configured in the Power Management section or in the ACPI Configuration settings. In both cases, you need to find the Power-On by Alarm parameter or something similar and set it to Enabled. Just below you need to indicate the days on which the activation will take place and the time. The Everyday value corresponds to daily activation. If you set the calendar date from the 1st to the 31st, the computer will turn on once a month on the scheduled day and time, which seems somewhat inconvenient. There are no settings for multiple dates in the BIOS options.
Configuring enablement in UEFI
In newer UEFI systems, you can also configure the computer to turn on on a schedule. After entering the parameters when starting your PC or laptop, you need to switch to advanced mode by pressing the F7 key.
On the “Advanced” tab, select the APM item, and in the list that appears, the corresponding button activates the power-on mode via RTC, sets the time and days for power-on activation, after which the installed options are saved upon exit.
Initial steps in the Task Scheduler
In principle, in order not to rummage through the settings of the primary systems, you can use the tools of the operating system itself, which is called the task scheduler (in most cases, automatic turning on and off of the computer in Windows 10 or in earlier systems is done with its help, although you can turn it off use the same optimization programs, which turn off the computer on its own after completing a scheduled scan and eliminating any problems found).
First, you should go to the power supply section, go to additional parameters in the settings of the current scheme, find the sleep item in the list displayed and check the box for allowing sleep timers. After this, you can start working with the task scheduler.
The scheduler itself can be called through a search or through the “Control Panel”. But most in a fast way access to it is considered to be using the “Run” console, in which the command taskschd.msc is written.
In the editor window, the scheduler libraries section is selected on the left, and the option to create a new task is used on the right. After this, you need to come up with a name for the task being created and enter it brief description.
Creating a trigger
The next step is to go to the triggers tab, where you need to click the create trigger button (as a rule, the main field will be empty).
After setting the necessary options, you should move to the actions tab and select from the list, say, display a message that will appear when you turn on the computer.
In the header and text fields of the message, enter what you think is necessary (for example, “With good morning!”) and save the changes.
Note: in the list of actions you can select other options related to playing a music file, starting to download a torrent, installing an update, etc.
Setting conditions
Finally, the most important option. In the conditions tab window, you need to deactivate all items if they are active, leaving only the line to wake up the computer to complete the task.
If you do not use it, there can be no talk of any automatic turning on of the computer.
When saving the installed options, if the settings were made for a specific user registered in the system, a confirmation window may be displayed for entering the login and password that were initially used to log into the system.
Upon completion of all actions, make sure that automatic setting active, you can see the created task appear in the main scheduler window, for which the status column will indicate “Ready”.
Third party utilities
You can also use third-party utilities to set automated power-on parameters. One of the simplest, but very interesting, is a program for automatically turning on or off the computer called Time PC.
Quick setup for daily modes is made by activating the “Off/On” item. PC", and to set the days of the week on which it will be activated this action, you should use the scheduler section. After setting the necessary options, all that remains is to press the start button, after which the task will be executed at the specified frequency at the selected time.
The Auto Power-on & Shut-down utility is just as simple. It also uses a setting in the scheduler section, but the application has much more possibilities, since it allows you to automate some other modes (hibernation, reboot, shutdown, launching programs, stopping processes, opening files or links on the Internet, etc.).
Another app is Wake Me Up. It can be called a kind of lightweight version of the Windows Task Scheduler. But the settings made by creating a new task here are simpler and more understandable.
Disabling the installed mode
Finally, a few words about how to disable automatic computer startup. In general, it all comes down to deactivating the installed mode. On primary systems, this mode is set to Disabled. In the scheduler, the created task is deleted. To shutdown without deleting the task, simply change the settings of the sleep timers, which were described above for the power section.
What to give preference to?
The only question that remains unresolved is which of everything described is best to use from a practical point of view. As many have already understood, the easiest way is to use special programs, since they are distinguished by maximum ease of setup and the ability to set the computer to be turned on/off by day of the week during the month. The parameters of the primary systems also do not look particularly complicated. And actions with the scheduler, by and large, duplicate BIOS/UEFI settings, adding only the ability to create a task description, display a message, or configure other actions.
But, based purely on practical considerations, I think the best option would be to use the Auto Power-on & Shut-down program, since it is the one that has the most expanded tools for all occasions. Some users may object that the use third party utilities will lead to the fact that they will constantly work in and “hang” in the system tray as a dead weight. One may not agree with this, since initially in such applications resource consumption is minimized as much as possible, and they are activated only according to the schedule established for the execution of the created tasks. Actually, if you look at it, it triggers once a day, unless several tasks are planned in the settings.
