Approximate recovery algorithm
First we need to decide on the type of recovery. If the file system is not damaged, no recording was made to the media, and you need to recover deleted files - select “DeletedRecovery”. If the file system was damaged or the media was formatted, then we first advise you to try “FormatRecovery”, and if it does not help, you can only use “RawRecovery”, which will result in files sorted by type. The names are not restored in this case.
First, we will look at the recovery algorithm using “AdvancedRecovery”, since in this case we can choose any of the above recovery types.
“FormatRecovery” differs only in that in it the search for MFT is disabled initially, and in “DeletedRecovery” there are settings for searching files by mask, so there is no point in considering these types of recovery within the framework of this article.
In cases where the file system is significantly damaged, it is advisable to use the program EasyRecovery in the “RawRecovery” mode (search by signatures). The disadvantage of “RawRecovery” is that the result of recovery will be a set of files without names, sorted by type. However, using this method it is possible to recover information in the most severe cases, when all other methods have failed.
To start this mode, select “RawRecovery”. From the list that appears, select the desired drive (the program shows the structure of the disks along with the partitions that were deleted).
Click the “Next” button. We watch the progress bar and wait for the result.

As a scan result, we get a list of files with names like FIL1.RAR, FIL2.RAR, etc., sorted according to types into various folders. How does writing to disk work?
The fact is that when we delete information from a disk, we do not delete it completely. Data is written to disk in clusters (cells). They may be different sizes. The most common clusters range in size from 18 (flash drives) to 8192 bytes (for some hard drives). For regular hard drives, the most commonly used size is 4096 bytes or 4K. The speed of transfer and processing of information from the disk depends on the cell size. The larger the files you are going to write to disk, the larger the cluster size should be.
But, if you write small files to large clusters, the disk will quickly fill up, since you put a small percentage of the information in large cells. Therefore, before choosing the cluster size, it is advisable to think about what exactly you will write to the disk (disk compression works on a similar principle).
Also, there are various formats for formatting recording devices. For hard drives This is usually the NTFS format, for FAT32 flash drives. When a person deletes data from a disk, only the header is erased, not the contents. The content remains (information in clusters). At the same time, the system will show that the hard drive is empty. This is the same as erasing the titles of books, while the contents of the books remain intact.
The same thing happens with quick formatting. When erasing, the names of the files are deleted, but the data inside the cells remains. Then, during new entry, the information in them simply changes. When we do Deep Formatting, information from the clusters is also deleted (although not always).
So, there are a number of programs that can restore this information from clusters. I have already written about programs Disk Drill for Windows, Hetman Photo Recovery, Recuva. These are all excellent programs, but the one we’ll talk about today is more professional and recovers data more slowly, but, and this is most important, more thoroughly! Most often it is used by professionals, although it is quite simple.
How to recover data from disk
Recently, I was working with a program that misconfigured my hard drive D. It erased information about it. Namely, what is the file system of the disk (it had NTFS) and what is its type (primary, logical, unidentified). The system began to identify the drive as Unnamed D with an incomprehensible file system.
In other words, it was not the data about the files on the disk that was deleted, but information about it as a whole. At the same time, it was indicated that the disk was not formatted in any of the formats. In order to be able to work with the disk, it was necessary to format the disk, only after that the system would be able to recognize it. The disk contained valuable information.
Therefore, before formatting, the information from it had to be restored to another medium. In my case, to drive E. Having considered various recovery programs, my choice fell on R-Studio, which can more thoroughly recover data not only from a flash drive, but also from hard drives, while preserving their structure.
R-Studio 8.8.17 preparation
First of all, you need to go to the software sales website and select R-studio 8.x for Windows (if, of course, you have Windows). You can download free R-Studio in Russian, trial version. But, it can only recover 33 MB, which is very little. Install the program. During installation, select Russian language.
After installation, if your language is automatically installed in English, this is easy to fix. Go to the Help menu, then Change Language, then select Russian.
The program immediately shows all your disks that you have installed. Including flash cards and optical discs. Yes, R-Studio can also recover data from optical discs.
So, a window opens that shows all our disks, including the flash drive. If we select any drive, it displays on the right full information about him. His serial number, its size, how many sectors, how many blocks, etc.
But, I am interested in exactly the disk from which the superficial information was erased. This is drive D. The computer sees it, but does not allow anything to be done with it.
What do I need from this program? I need to not only restore all files, their types, programs that were on the disk. I need to restore its structure. Folders and files in the form in which they were before the loss of information.
For example, you need to restore the folder in which you were installed programs. I always installed programs on a separate disk (not on the system disk). Separately, a folder with video courses, with pictures. A folder with packed uninstalled software, and other folders on this disk.
Including all the subfolders that were in the folders. In other words, it is necessary to restore the disk structure to the way it was originally.
Of all the file recovery programs that I gave you above, only R-Studio was able to cope with this task.
How to work with R-Studio 8.8
So, I select the disk from which I want to return information and click “Scan”.
We are preparing for scanning. A window appears with two input lines. From it we can see where to start scanning and where to finish. In other words, if you know that your partition occupied 50 GB, indicate starting from 0 and ending at 50 GB. In my case, start from 0, end up to 360.28 GB, i.e. you need to completely scan the disk and see what R-Studio can find on it. I advise you to leave all file settings as the program suggests, click scan.
In the right window of the program we have a scan map displayed, similar to a defragmentation map. It displays where, in what part of the disk, what is located. These are various files, programs, etc. During the life of this disk section, various information was written to it many times and deleted many times. The scan map shows what is in which disk cell. The scanning process took me about half an hour.
Now let's look at the results that the program found. Of the sections that the program found, I am interested in “Recognized 0”, because it has a capacity of 360.28 GB, i.e., exactly the capacity of my disk. This is the section we need. All other sections are tiny, except for “Recognized 1”, which has a volume of 30.31GB. But it's empty for me.
So, click on “Recognized 0” to see its structure. Now we have started sorting and creating a structure of files and folders on the disk.
Now we see that R-Studio has created the disk structure that was before cleaning the disk, and placed it in the Root folder (root) specially created by the program. Don't be scared by folders and files marked with a red cross. This means the program was able to identify them. Interestingly, the program found many files that were on the disk much earlier, and which I deliberately deleted. The program found them too.
Now, our task is to carefully review all the folders, all subdirectories found by R-Studio. It is necessary to weed out unnecessary folders and files (some of the files previously refused to be deleted, they were marked as system files, but now it is enough to simply not restore them).
In the metafiles folder we see files that the program has sorted by extension. This is some kind of mixture of various pictures and other files from various programs that were on this disk and at least some of them were deleted. I don't need them, and I won't check them. You also don’t need them, so don’t check the box above this folder.
We mark those folders that we want to restore with a tick. Next, click “Restore marked”.
A window opens, in it, above the pink line, select the folder where we will restore all the found folders. For this purpose I specially created separate folder on another drive E. Please note that it is necessary to restore data to another drive (partition), because if you restore information to the same partition, the program may overwrite the newly restored files.
We are starting to restore folders, which lasted about three hours. You even need to restore files that are closed by the system (the program will ask whether to restore the file?).
So, the restoration is complete. The Root folder was completely transferred with all the files marked with a checkmark.
Now, I am formatting the D drive in NTFS format and select the cluster size of 4096 bytes. After this, I copy (not cut) all the folders to the formatted drive D. After copying, I check the functionality of all programs and files transferred to the restored disk. Only after this do we delete all duplicate folders from drive E.
After going through this process, I advise you to clean Windows and defragment all disks. The best defragmenter is Defraggler.
How to recover deleted data from a flash drive
After we were able to recover all the data of the whole hard section disk, recovering data from a flash card is not difficult. Let's launch the program. Mark the disk that you have as a flash drive. For me this is drive G. Click scan. The scan takes 20 minutes.
The program created the Recognized0 directory, which contains the Rood folder. Open it and view the contents. We tick the found files that we need to restore and click “Restore marked”.
Then, we select the location on the computer where we want to restore the files we are looking for from the flash drive, and restore it. Restoration complete!

Files are recovered even if disks are formatted or the file system is damaged.Initially, R–Studio was developed for the purpose of being used by people working in computer repair services or experienced PC users. Beginners can be advised to use the R–Undelete program, which is a simpler analogue of the program from this category.
One day, R–Studio helped in returning a block of four disks located in a RAID array. More than 70 percent of the data was successfully recovered. I must say a special thank you to the programmers who created such a wonderful software product as R–Studio.
