How to make a smooth layer transition in Photoshop. Background: gradient(); CSS. Smooth transition from one color to another. Soft brushes and layer masks
Today I'll show you how to make a smooth transition between two photos.
I made a picture in advance and this is the result I got:
In order to get such a picture, I will take two photographs that I will combine.
I took beautiful background with the sea and a photograph of a girl photographed against the backdrop of gloomy trees without leaves.
So let's get started - I will do smooth transition of colors and for this I will follow these steps:
Step 1
Opening my photos in Photoshop and using the tool Moving I drag a photo of a girl onto a photo with a sea background.
I want to make the photo of the girl a little smaller and for this I call Free transformation by pressing the keyboard shortcut CTRL+T.
The frame that appears around the photo with the girl has knots that you can pull and reduce the size of the photo, while you need to hold down the key Shift, so that the proportions of the image are not distorted.
Step 2
Now I'm moving to the palette Layers and being on the layer with the girl, I click on the icon called Add a vector mask.
As we see in the palette Layers A layer mask has been formed on the layer with the girl, which is highlighted with a frame, which indicates that the mask is active and all the work that I will do will be carried out precisely on the layer mask.
On the top panel where all the instrument settings are located Gradient I click on arrow, located next to the tool icon and in the window that appears with gradients, I select radial Gradient, which goes from black to transparent.
Now I draw the gradient lines not reaching the girl's figure, as indicated in the picture (you may have more directions). When you draw a gradient line, the background smoothly disappears.
It took me two or three times to draw the gradient line in each of the directions indicated in the picture to achieve the result that you see in the picture below.
Step 4
However, we can notice that with the disappearance of the background belonging to the girl’s photograph, the image of the girl itself also changed somewhat, since in some places it became translucent.
But this is very easy to fix.
While on the layer mask, I take a soft round brush white and I paint on the girl with this brush.
The white brush restores all the lost areas of the girl's image.
And we also want to remind you that you can always chat about Photoshop topics on the Photoshop forum and find answers to many of your questions.
Here's what happened as a result:
I joined two photos together using smooth transition.
I hope I explained it clearly, how to make a smooth transition between two photos - as you can see it's quite simple.
I also advise you to watch my previous lesson Valentika in Photoshop, which contains a lot of interesting things.
I wish you further success in mastering Photoshop!

Hello dear beginning webmasters. Again .
In this article I will tell you how to make a transition from dark shades to lighter ones, as well as from one color to another.
This action is called a gradient, and since it is essentially a background image, it is executed by the background property, which takes two values:
1. linear-gradient - color transition from one edge or corner to another.
2. radial-gradient - color transition from the center to the edges.
It is written as follows:
background : -moz-linear-gradient (top, #ff0000, #ffcfcf );
top, #ff0000, #ffcfcf );
Below, using an example, we will examine in detail each element of this record.
Unfortunately, gradient still has issues with display in browsers and the W3C specification, so values still have to be prefixed.
A prefix is placed at the beginning of the value, and begins with a dash.
We will have to insert such a list into the element selector, creating a gradient for it, so that your very beautiful background will be reflected correctly in all browsers. Beauty requires sacrifice.
/body >
This is the simplest, two-color gradient. Let's take a closer look at the values of the background property
The first line sets the background for browsers that do not support linear gradients.
The next 5 lines are for displaying the background in different browsers. First, the gradient value is written with a prefix at the beginning.
Then, in parentheses:
top - the direction from which the first color starts (can be bottom , left , right )
#ff0000 — first color separated by commas;
#ffcfcf — second color separated by commas;
Safari, up to version 5, and Chrome up to ten had their own syntax, which significantly increased the code. This is probably why the gradient for these versions is often not specified, especially if there are a large number of colors.
You can make a color transition not horizontally or vertically, but from corner to corner. For this purpose there are the following directions:
bottom right - from the bottom right corner to the top left;
bottom left - from bottom left to top right;
top right - from top right to bottom left;
top left - from top left to bottom right;
You can make a color transition from the center of the block to the edges. Then in the meaning, instead of the word linear (linear), put radial (radial)
#gradient (
background : #ff0000 ;
background : -moz-radial-gradient ( center, ellipse cover, #ff0000, #ffcfcf);
background : -webkit-radial-gradient ( center, ellipse cover, #ff0000, #ffcfcf);
center, ellipse cover, #ff0000, #ffcfcf);
center, ellipse cover, #ff0000, #ffcfcf);
width: 600px;
height: 400px;
border : 1px solid #333 ;
}
Now let's make something like a rainbow, so to speak. To do this, add a couple more colors to the above code, and set the volume of each color as a percentage (the number of colors is not limited)
The color volume is set from 0% to 100% (the first is 0%, the last is 100%, the rest are in between in order). Let's consider this option on a radial gradient. On a linear one, everything is done in the same way.
#gradient (
background : #ff0000 ;
background: -moz-radial-gradient();
background : -webkit-radial-gradient t( center, ellipse cover, #ff0000 0%, #00b630 30%, #6ff5f5 70%, #ffcfcf 100%);
background : -o-radial-gradient ( center, ellipse cover, #ff0000 0%, #00b630 30%, #6ff5f5 70%, #ffcfcf1005);
background : -ms-radial-gradient ( center, ellipse cover, #ff0000 0%, #00b630 30%, #6ff5f5 70%, #ffcfcf 100%);
width: 600px;
height: 400px;
border : 1px solid #333 ;
}
The principle, I think, is clear. So try to write a line for Safari up to the fifth version, and Chrome up to the tenth, yourself.
The gradient is set to any HTML block (body, div, h1-6, p, ul, ol), and both global and built-in style (this is for a WordPress site).
Now a few words about how and where to choose colors. There are services for creating gradients that offer color, volume percentage, and gradient code, but their choice is limited by supply.
Therefore, I use the tool colorscheme.ru, in which you can choose a color in an unlimited range, and optimally selected sequences and combinations.
In the top row of the panel, you select the number of colors to combine. Going through “Angle 30°” changes the selection range.
In "Scheme Adjustment", the tone is made darker or lighter. In the “List of Colors”, all the colors present in the diagram are arranged by saturation, and with a code in the signature.
In general, there are unlimited possibilities for choosing colors to create a gradient.
I wish you creative success.

We are pleased to welcome you to our next lesson on working in Adobe Photoshop. This article will talk about how to create smooth transitions in the program at the border between images/colors. This is a very useful skill that you will definitely need, so let's get started!
Making a smooth transition between colors
Because Photoshop is professional program image processing, very often the same result can be achieved in several ways. Same with transitions.
Using the Gradient tool
You are probably familiar with this tool. Therefore, go to the toolbar on the left and select "Gradient".
Once the tool is selected, a Gradient settings panel will appear below the main menu, where you can select a gradient template and set additional parameters as desired.
Unfortunately, the standard set of gradients does not include many templates, so you can use the search and expand your collection, or create your own version.
In order for the transition to be precisely colored and not transparent, you also need to set the settings for the opacity control point (see screenshot below):
After everything is ready, all that remains is to apply the changes by clicking “OK” and fill the canvas with a gradient. To do this, we create a selected area that we want to fill, or apply a gradient to the entire canvas. Just click LMB (left mouse button) on in the right place and pull as long as necessary.
Important! Pay attention to what type of fill is selected:
In our case “Linear Gradient”.
Via Layer Mask
This method is used by experienced users. All actions will take place through the layers palette. Let's get started:
Through selection feathering
The essence of this method is to create a smooth transition at the border of the filled object/picture and the background. Let's get started!
- We will need the Rectangular Marquee tool.
- Now you need to create a selection:
- When the selection is ready, use hotkeys SHIFT+F6 call up a window where you need to enter a value in the item “Feather radius”.
- Afterwards, you need to fill in the formed selection. To do this, we will again use hotkeys SHIFT+F5 and select the fill color.
- After applying the changes, we get the following smooth transition result:
- All that remains is to remove the selection using CTRL+D and you're done:
As you can see, there is nothing difficult in making smooth transitions between colors in Photoshop. We have presented as many as 3 ways to do this, each of which is suitable in a certain situation.
That's all! See you in our next lessons!
Move the second photo to the previously opened one.
You can read more about connecting photos in.
Then, using the Move Tool, we set the desired location of the photos relative to each other. You need to make sure that one photo overlaps the other, and a smooth transition will be created at the point of overlap. For convenience, you can temporarily reduce the opacity of images in Layers panel, it is also a good idea to place guides at the boundaries of the overlap.
Now let’s determine which photo will be on top, and if necessary let's change the location layers in the Layers panel. I will have an image with Twitter on top.
Then set the opacity of the image layers back to one hundred percent.
And now, let's move on to actually creating a smooth transition between photographs, in in this example We will do this using a layer mask and applying a black and white gradient.
Add to the layer with the original photo layer mask, by clicking on the corresponding icon at the bottom of the palette, with the colors in color palette automatically changed to black foreground color and white background color, in Layers panel A mask icon will appear on the corresponding layer. Then open the Gradient Tool in the tool palette. In the upper left corner of the Photoshop working window, click on the triangle to open the gradient palette, and select the very first one, called “From foreground to background.” Then we draw a line from one guide to another in the direction shown in the figure.
In order to draw a gradient line strictly horizontally (or, for other cases, strictly vertically), hold down the Shift key.
As a result, we will get a smooth transition to transparency of the right edge of the top image, which gives the effect of a smooth transition between the two photographs.
On the mask icon in the Layers panel we will see the following changes: black color shows full transparency, and white, on the contrary, full opacity of the image to which the layer mask is applied.
That's all, the task is completed!
